Maria Makiling is the protagonist of the story. The guardian of the mountain. She is the one who protects the flora, fauna and the people who reside close to it. She has a strong connection to nature. If anything were to happen to her, the surrounding greenery will be affected. She is well respected by the people of the village. She represents the kindness and compassion people have.

Isagani is the deuteragonist of the story. The son of a hunter who struggles to accept the actions of his father. He represents the people who see the injustices around him and takes action to the best of his ability.
The deer
The Deer is the one that drives
the story. It is the symbol of innocence
and purity.
The Golden tree
At the end of the story, the deer’s ashes bless the sapling and it grows into a huge golden tree.
Style frames
Maria is roaming around the forest she encounters a wounded deer and she heals the deer with her powers.
The deer starts to follow her around all the way through the village where we meet its people.
Night falls and Maria and the Deer return back to the forest. A duo of hunters creep behind the bushes and kill the deer.
Maria defends against them using her powers. Isagani, the son of the other hunter manages to escape.
Due to Maria’s sorrow, a drought emerges and the greenery start to decay.
Isagani sees a live seedling and presents it to Maria. This shows his empathy, she restores the forest using every bit of her powers.
